FAQ|Ecommerce Hosting Solutions
Question about ecommerce hosting solutions:

I’m starting a niche natural/eco-friendly ecommerce business and would like to use a green hosting company. I orginally was looking at using Yahoo’s Small Business ecommerce solution simply because it’s easy and everything is right “out of the box” plus it seems like a great way to get started with an ecommerce biz fairly easily. The only problem is their hosting isn’t ecofriendly or “green”. I would love to have a “green” web host since this goes along with my business and plus I don’t want to be wasting energy. So my question is really two fold, 1) CAN I use a green” hosting service while at the same time using Yahoo’s ecommerce solution 2) Which green hosting service is best?

What Makes Hostgator’s Green Program More Special

Hostgator stands out compared to other web hosting companies due to the following two reasons:

1. HostGator is applying renewable power for you to both power and cool their servers, whilst a variety of green hosts only offset the energy used to power their servers. That represents a big difference, because servers produce a large amount of heat. For every single watt of electrical power that a server utilizes, 1-2 watts of electrical power are usually required to cool  it. What which means is that HostGator is investing in about twice as much renewable power, on a per server basis, compared to other green hosts which merely applying renewable energy to power their hosts.

2. HostGator has invested in Eco-friendly -e certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). That indicates that all of HostGator’s RECs are usually verified, tracked and monitored.

3. HostGator has bought RECs for 130% from the electricity utilized to boost and cool the shared and reseller servers.

4. HostGator has invested totally in wind RECs produced in Texas.

I have been in the internet business since 1996.
There is no GREEN hosting services.
    let me explain the terms.
hosting mean they have a Server in a room. it does not imply any software but the operation system. These rooms have a network that connects each server to the internet. The Power for these servers is generated by the power company, unless there is a power outage. then they switch to a desiel power Generator.
To be Green would entaile a Solar, and or Wind system. Both are unreliable to provide power at the right time if there is a power outage.
They use Batteries for back up while switch between Grid power and internal power, so those are not Green either.
Bottom line there is no GREEN Hosting service. Now there is one exception, in the Washington State the power is generated by Dams on the columbia river. The problem is Washington can not produce enough power for the peak demands so buy power from other sources that are not GREEN.

    Next is Web hosting.
Web hosting comes in two flavors, Shared hosting an Dedicated hosting. this is where a company either contracts with a hosting service like above and then charges for a Web software they put on it or They create thier own hosting Company and Provide web Software.
To give you a lower cost they put many clients on one server, hence the shared hosting. The problem is that the amount of people that are on a shared hosting server are enough, to cause slow responses. this is usually with the under $50 a month hosting packages.
The cheaper the Hosting package slower the response from your website.
Slow response is what kills sales for a ecommerce website. most people are impulse buyers and 15 sec can be the difference between a sale or not.
Yes yahoo has problems, but there is not one shared hosting company that does not.
You don’t want to get on a platform that does not let you move you website if you chose to. if you go with Yahoo, and some others, you can not just pick up your website and move to another host.
There are a lot of concernes to deal with a ecmmerce site. Like having Credit card information your site stores stolen.
This could cause you large fines, if it happens.

no you can not move the yahoo hosting anywhere. It is stated in the Terms of service. Besides the Code yahoo uses only works on there severs.
if you want to learn about yahoo from store owners.
check out the link to a forum.

I don’t think that you can use Yahoo’s ecommerce solution on another web host. However there are other options for setting up a store/shopping cart system that are free: zencart, osCommerce and CubeCart. Any web host with Fantastico in their cPanel (control panel) will have easy 1 click installations of these scripts. The best green host is HostGator.
